Kidnapping Suspect Arrested After Chase, Crash & Barricade Situation

By Dillon Thomas

DENVER (CBS4) - According to police in Denver, a kidnapping suspect was arrested Saturday after leading police on a chase.

Eranda Piyasena, spokesman for the Denver Police Department, said the search for the suspect took place after he crashed a vehicle and left the scene.

The suspect, only being identified as an adult male, allegedly rolled over a Jeep after a crash just after 8 a.m. at the intersection of 26th Avenue and Federal Boulevard.

Police said the vehicle also carried an adult female, whom the suspect allegedly kidnapped.

"I just saw the girl in the Jeep just lying there. It looked like she was knocked out," said Josh Kilbourne, an eyewitness to the crash. "That guy came through the back window, and he was just walking around saying 'I'm okay, I'm fine.' I was like, 'Are you really just going to leave her here like that?'"

Following the crash, Kilbourne said the man left the scene, and got into another vehicle.

Piyasena told CBS4 the suspect carjacked an innocent driver, and left the scene in their vehicle.

Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, and Denver police later responded to a home at the intersection of Wadsworth Boulevard and 24th Avenue. The suspect was found at the home, barricaded inside.

SWAT units responded to the scene, where they were seen wearing tactical gear and carrying rifles.

Though the suspect eventually turned himself in to authorities without force needed, police told CBS4 the response was necessary to keep the community safe.

"Anytime we have a crime to that severity -- a carjacking -- people's safety is in danger," Piyasena said.

Police said the suspect would face many charges, including reckless driving, fleeing the scene of an accident, and evading police.
