Broncos Team Headlines: Green Selected As Payton Award Winner

By Rick Brown

It's been a busy week for the Denver Broncos (8-4) as the team prepares for the Tennessee Titans (6-6) in this week's matchup.

The Broncos added much-needed depth in the backfield picking up former Lions/Ravens back Justin Forsett off waivers, as Karpi Bibbs was placed on injured reserve (IR). The team is also monitoring Trevor Siemian's foot injury and hopes that he can start against the Titans on Sunday.

'Tis the season for giving, as the Broncos awarded Virgil Green with the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

The Broncos Claim Justin Forsett Off Waivers

The Broncos needed to add depth to the backfield when Bibbs was placed on IR with a high ankle sprain that he suffered in the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-10). Bibbs has seen limited action in 12 games this season with 129 yards and one receiving touchdown. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions (8-4) released Justin Forsett last Saturday. He made it through claims and was awarded to the Broncos.

Forsett is familiar with Gary Kubiak's offense, as he has played for Kubiak twice before, in Houston and in Baltimore. Forsett had his best year when Kubiak was Baltimore's offensive coordinator in 2014. That year, Forsett rushed for 1266 yards and eight touchdowns. Forsett should be able to quickly adjust to the Broncos' offense.

Trevor Siemian Sheds Walking Boot

Siemian was sidelined during the win against the Jaguars with a foot injury. The Broncos' offense led by Paxton Lynch was ineffective. The team had less than 225 yards of total offense and only scored one touchdown. Siemian is making progress and the team and fans are hopeful he will be able to start against the Titans.

The Broncos would prefer to start a quarterback who is 7-3 as a starter with 2396 yards and 15 touchdowns. Even though Lynch was selected in the first round of the draft, he is still having issues with accuracy and footwork. Starting Siemian would give the Broncos the best chance of victory against a tough Titans' team.

Virgil Green Selected For Walter Payton Award

Since joining the team in 2011, Green has continued to work hard on and off the field. The Broncos awarded Green with the Walter Payton Man of the Year award to show the team's appreciation for how hard he works off the field. Green volunteers in a number of ways, including the United Way and NFL PLAY 60. While working with children, Green is a part of the Power Lunch program, which looks to improve children literacy. Promoting a healthy lifestyle is also important to Green. The NFL PLAY 60 was created to promote athleticism through being active for at least an hour a day. Green has never missed an opportunity to help when NFL PLAY 60 is sponsored in Colorado. Green has worked hard for these accomplishments and is certainly most deserving.

Each team in the NFL names a recipient of the Walter Payton award. Green will receive $50,000 for a charity of his choosing and a donation will be made to the Character Playbook, a charity that trains students on how to create and maintain a healthy lifestyle. From the 32 selected team recipients, the NFL will choose one player to receive the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year award. This player will receive an additional $500,000 donation to a charity of their choice.
