Guilty Verdict Handed Down In Felony DUI Trial

DENVER (CBS4) - For the first time in a Denver court, a repeat drunk driver has been convicted on a felony DUI charge.

A jury found Matthew Allen, 40, guilty of driving under the influence on Tuesday morning. It's the fourth time Allen has been found guilty of DUI.

In 2015 Colorado lawmakers enacted tougher penalties for repeat drunk drivers. An offender's fourth DUI is now a felony, and that person faces more prison time and a fine as high as $500,000.

The Denver district attorney's office says Allen could spend as much as six years in prison. He'll be sentenced in January.

Police arrested Allen in March after he was spotted cutting off an ambulance.
