Stabbing Suspect Tried To Hit Patrol Cars During Chase

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - Investigators in northern Colorado say they are working on a sex assault case which ended with a police chase Wednesday night. The suspect was released early from prison for a separate violent attack.

Fort Collins police were called to a shopping center near the busy intersection of Harmony Road and College Avenue just before 10 p.m. Wednesday night.

The suspect, who police say was Jessie Frias, allegedly threatened and injured a female victim with a knife. When police arrived, Frias took off in a vehicle.

Police pursued Frias' car. Fort Collins Officer Dustin Wier said his department was assisted by the Larimer County sheriff's office and the Colorado State Patrol.

"During the incident the suspect attempted to hit several patrol vehilces," Wier said.

Frias crashed his car near Harmony Road and Snow Mesa Drive, then ran into a neighborhood, where he was captured shortly afterwards.

One sheriff's vehicle was damaged but no one was hurt.

"We're always grateful when no officers or suspects are injured. Our goal is to make our officers go home at the end of every shift," Wier said.

Online records show Frias was arrested in 1997 for the stabbing of a convenience store clerk and stealing money and that he was released after serving 18 years of a 32 year sentence.

For Wednesday's incident, he's facing a parole violation and several felonies, including sex assault with a deadly weapon and vehicular eluding.

Frias was scheduled to appear in court on Friday morning. Jail records indicated he would not be allowed to bond out.
