Semi Driver In Serious Condition After Crashing Into Building, Witnesses Call Driving 'Reckless'

STERLING, Colo. (CBS4) - The driver of a semi-truck was seriously injured after crashing into a building Friday night.

Police say they got several calls of a tractor-trailer driving recklessly on Main Street in Sterling Friday night. When officers responded they found the truck had crashed into a building undergoing renovations.

"Sterling Emergency Communication Center received several calls of a tractor-trailer speeding and driving recklessly on West Main Street traveling east. Officers immediately responded to the West Main area and upon their arrival at 8:42 p.m., observed the vehicle had crashed into the old Aarons building located at 430 Main Street," police said in a statement.

The driver, Travis Ayres, 32, of Nebraska, was hospitalized and listed in serious condition.

"The preliminary investigation indicates speed was a factor and the investigation continues to determine any other possible contributing causes," police said.
