Reminder Given About Smoke Detectors After Fatal Fire

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Officials in Aurora are reminding residents to check the batteries in their smoke detectors following a fatal fire.

The fire started in a home along 7th Avenue on Wednesday morning and quickly spread to two other houses.

It's not clear how much warning the residents inside the homes that burned had. Seven people were in one of the homes, and one of them didn't survive.

One fire victim remained in critical condition in the hospital Wednesday night. Three others also had to be taken to the hospital.

Neighbors said fire and heavy smoke was pouring out of the homes just after 7:30 a.m. Ramiyah Muhammad told CBS4 she was leaving her home at that time.

"As soon as I turned, smoke and ash (was) just blowing our way. The wind was blowing this way and as I looked I saw the flames," Muhammad said.

The person who was killed was a middle-aged woman. She has not been identified.

"It's scary. When you live around here and then hear that she died? That's sad," Mary Hester said.

Neighbors returned to the scene of the fire throughout the day hoping they could find a way to help.
"It's been heavy on my heart all day and I wanted to see what happened," Muhammad said.

There's no word so far on what started the fire. One family was displaced.
