Ski Areas Hope Season Improves After Late Start

KEYSTONE, Colo. (CBS4) - Keystone Ski Resort hopes the third time is a charm. The ski area has pushed back opening day three times. Now it's aiming for Nov. 18.

Keystone initially targeted Nov. 4 as its opening day. Then it pushed it back to Nov. 11. Now the ski area hopes to have enough snow to open by Nov. 18.

Unseasonably warm weather has kept most ski areas in Colorado from opening in the first two weekends of November.

At Loveland Ski Area, snowcats finally have enough man-made snow to push around.

"Our workers are hard at work today, some of them are working around the clock to get those final jobs completed," said Loveland Ski Area spokesman Dustin Schaefer.

Loveland is one of the many struggling to make snow in the warm weather. Arapahoe Basin was the first, and the only so far, ski area to open for the season on Oct. 21.

"We're going to have a top-to-bottom run, 1,000 vertical feet, tree-to-tree coverage, 18 inch base," said Schaefer.

Last season, Loveland Ski Area opened on Oct. 29.

Copper Mountain has also delayed its opening day to Nov. 18.

"Pushing our opening day back is difficult, obviously. We're all ready to get out there and ski and snowboard but to make sure that we kick the season off right we decided to move it back a week and hope Mother Nature kicks in ASAP," said Copper Mountain Ski Area spokeswoman Steph Sweeney.
