Protesters In Colorado Take To The Streets After Donald Trump's Win

By Stan Bush

DENVER (CBS4) - Donald Trump's path to the White House seemed impossible. Now scores of protesters are taking to the streets worried the controversial statements that helped take the political neophyte win the country's highest elected office will also become reality.

"They're scared, they really are. No exaggeration. They're scared. People are scared," said Ricardo Martinez. "There is a high degree of anxiety because they don't know what's going to happen."

Mexican-American organizations, like Padres Unidos, fear Trump will set record numbers for deportations. They worry a Trump immigration policy would break up families or even send children who are natural born citizens out of the country because their parents are illegal immigrants. Trump's rhetoric, calling Mexicans "rapists and drug dealers," is also worrying the Hispanic community of potential violence.

"I'm scared people who think it's okay to say racist things will act out on it.," said Karissa Frolov.

Trump's election shocked the world late Tuesday night. Protesters are unified in their anger, but not in their cause. To name just a few of the issues protesters have raised Trump has called for -- a wall along the Mexican border, the revocation of international trade deals, advocated the use of torture, endorsed "stop and frisk" policing, and wants to ban some religions from entering the country. Even students at schools around the state walked out of class in protest.

Protester Ayinde Russell called Trump's election a 'dark time for America.'"

"This is maybe the most disappointed I've ever been in our country and that's not without an understanding of history," Russell said.
