Feeling A Little Stress This Election Year? You're Not Alone

DENVER (CBS4) - If you're feeling a little uneasy about the election, you're not alone. Surveys show most Americans are stressed out about this election.

With all the vitriol in the 2016 election, anxiety is running high. But will it stop after your vote is cast?

"I don't like all the animosity," said a Denver voter.

Voters say they've had enough.

"Yes, I am (stressful) … more than I've ever been," another voter said.

"The candidates both have some baggage," another said.

Mental health experts say election anxiety is real.

"Elections always come with a certain amount of stress, however, this election is different," said Dr. Shawn Daugherty, a clinical psychologist with the Medical Center of Aurora. "Their unfavorability ratings are so high that people are nervous. 'Is this person going to represent me? Is this person going to represent our nation? And are they going to move us forward?'"

In fact, an American Psychological Association survey found that 52 percent of American adults say the 2016 election is a very, or somewhat, significant source of stress in their lives.

It's an equal opportunity worry

"I will be glad when it's over," a voter said.

That may not end come Wednesday.

"I could be packing my bags and going to Costa Rica, who knows?" another said.

The experts say to cut back on election stress, eat right, take a walk, and tune out if you need to.
