Affordable Artist Studios Offered In RiNo Arts District

DENVER (CBS4) - Many artists are getting pushed out of arts districts in Denver because of skyrocketing rental prices. At least one landlord is taking the problem head-on by offering discounted rent more than a dozen artists.

Sonia Danielsen's family has owned the Bindery on Blake building since 1976.

"When my Dad bought the building and moved the family printing company in here in 1979," Danielsen explained.

The building was originally built in 1927, and in 2014, when the printing business moved out, Danielsen completely renovated the building. At that time she carved out 13 artist studios that she was determined to rent for $500 a month. From fashion designers, to computer artists, book binders, to painters, Danielson was filled the space with a wide variety of artists who might not otherwise afford to stay in the RiNo neighborhoods.

"What originally made RiNo cool were the artists," Danielsen told CBS4.

"I love this space," said Tim Mooney, an artist renting from Danielsen.

Mooney had moved out of RiNo, but still wanted to keep a work space there. The affordable rents at the Bindery on Blake makes that possible.

"It's enough space to call your own. But noise travels and you can build a community here," Mooney explained.

Community is exactly what Danielsen wanted to preserve with her family's legacy.

"Every day, when I walk in here, it just warms my heart to see our 14 artists working and creating in this building," Danielsen said.
