Charges Unlikely After 18-Month-Old Girl Drowns

By Andrea Flores

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - A Lakewood neighborhood is still in shock after learning an 18-month-old girl drowned Tuesday afternoon.

Lakewood police say the girl was in the front yard with her grandfather while he was doing yard work and likely wandered to the neighbor's backyard and into a pond.

The neighbors weren't home at the time of the accident.

Authorities say neighbors, who live behind the home, saw her fall in and pulled her from the pond, but it was too late.

Attempts to revive the girl at the scene, and at the hospital, were unsuccessful.

"The worst that possibly could have happened, happened," said neighbor Laurence Leiber.

Leiber, a father of two, lives across the street from where the accident occurred, and knows how quickly kids can move.

"Fast, fast, fast," Leiber said. "Faster than you could ever imagine."

Detectives are working to figure how long the young girl was in the water before she was found.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday but results haven't been released.

The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office will investigate the case.

Lakewood police say it's unlikely the grandparents will face any charges.
