Man Who Fell At Stadium After Broncos Game Dies
DENVER (CBS4) - A man who fell off a railing at Mile High Stadium and dropped 60 feet on Monday night has died.
The incident happened sometime after the conclusion of the Denver Broncos game against the Houston Texans.
Denver authorities said Tuesday afternoon that they suspect Jason Coy, 36, was sitting on a railing before he fell. They said emergency crews and witnesses immediately began to try to help the man.
"He fell backwards and just... every level," said Mile High Stadium employee Michael Martinez. "Each level that he fell down he hit his head and... it was pretty gruesome."
Denver's coroner said the cause of death was blunt force injuries.
Police continue to investigate the deadly fall but no foul play is believed to be involved.
"At this time it appears this man was sitting on top of a railing, lost his balance and fell about 60 feet," said Denver Police Department spokesman Doug Schepman.
Officials with Sports Authority Field at Mile High released a short statement Tuesday morning before the news of the death came out, stating that the fan was taken to the hospital after the fall and that their thoughts were with the victim.
The Denver Broncos released this statement on Tuesday afternoon: "The Denver Broncos are extremely saddened to learn that Jason Coy, the fan who fell over a stairwell railing at Monday night's game, has passed away. Along with Stadium Management Company, we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and friends.
"Providing a safe, enjoyable environment for guests at Sports Authority Field at Mile High is the top priority for the Broncos and SMC. We're reviewing this tragic incident and will continue to maintain all necessary safety measures for our fans."
The incident happened on the north end of the stadium, between Gates 4 and 5 in an enclosed stairwell.
Last year, a man fell 20 feet at the stadium after a Broncos-Ravens game. Police later said the man was intoxicated.
Police continue to investigate other factors that may be included in the most recent deadly fall.
"It's unclear to us right now whether there were drugs or alcohol involved. That would be part of the medical examiner's investigation into this matter," said Schepman.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Jason Coy's family.
