Trail Of Blood Helps Officers Locate Man Who Fired At Police

By Jamie Leary

BOULDER Colo. (CBS4) - After a 9 hour search, the man involved in a late night shooting in Boulder was taken into custody.

Russell Daniels, 34, was captured just before 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

The incident began at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Police were investigating reports of a suspicious motor home parked on Hickory Avenue and Brooklawn Drive. Daniels was inside along with a woman who has a restraining order against him.

Officers also discovered Daniels had an active warrant for his arrest in addition to a lengthy criminal history.

When officers approached the motor home, the woman escaped and Daniels fired four rounds inside.

"The situation escalated within minutes. As soon as we attempted to make contact with the individual and he saw police, he immediately became uncooperative," Boulder Police spokeswoman Shannon Cordingly said.

Officers then threw the woman to the ground, shielding her from the gunfire.

Daniels ended up apparently shooting and injuring himself in the process and fled. It's unclear if the shots were actually intended for officers.

The incident forced a "shelter in place" order for nearby homes. More than 6,000 homes were notified of the threat via a reverse 911 call.

There was so much commotion outside the motor home, sleeping wasn't an option for neighbors.

"There was that one shot and then there were like four bangs right after," a male resident told CBS4. "I came out in the street ... and said (to myself) it's time to go back in."

The suspect left a trail of blood, which officers followed using a dog team. As the search progressed, they teamed with Copter4 which provided assistance from the air.
