Crews Have Tough Time Battling Wildfire On Eastern Plains

AGATE, Colo. (CBS4) - Firefighters were battling a large wildfire that broke out east of Agate Monday evening.

According to the Elizabeth Fire Protection District, the Basin Fire was estimated at 2,000 acres.

The fire was burning in a ravine and crews were having hard time getting into the area to fight it.

There were 25 units on scene divided into divisions.

"We're battling it as soon as it comes up out of the ravine," Kara Gerczynski with the Elizabeth Fire Protection District told CBS4.

It's not clear how the fire started.

Late Monday night the fire was mostly contained.

Agate is located along Interstate 70 northwest of Limon on the Eastern Plains.

"Multiple fire agencies responded to a call of multiple brush fires in the 43000 block of CR 162, Agate, unincorporated Elbert County. Fire agencies on scene are Agate , Elbert , Simla , Limon, Rattle Snake, Elizabeth, Deer Trail, North Central, Bennett and Byers. Elbert County Sheriff and Elbert County Road and Bridge is on scene to assist. At this time the fire has reached 2000 acres in area. Due to the rough terrain and vast geography there has been no containment. No structures threatened at this time, no injuries at this time."
