Manitou Incline Set To Close During Improvement Project
MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- The Manitou Incline will close once again for four months during the second phase of an improvement project.
The Manitou Incline is a mile-long hike with an elevation gain of 2,000 feet in Manitou Springs west of Colorado Springs, but heavy foot traffic and rain have eroded the trail over the years.
Colorado Springs closed it in 2014 to repair the steepest area but city officials say more work needs to be done.
The incline will be closed on Aug. 22 for the project.
About 2,000 hikers climb the incline on a typical summer weekend day.
Repairs include installing retention walls and chases for water flow, as well as stabilizing the slopes.
Former Major League Baseball star Barry Bonds, a hitting coach for the Miami Marlins, was in in Colorado for the Marlins series with the Rockies earlier this month and made an Instagram video during his jaunt up the incline.
"Morning workout, Colorado Springs -- the incline ... I've got to be out of my mind," a panting Bonds says during the video.
