Jefferson County DA Safety Fair Has Something For Everyone

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- The Jefferson County District Attorney's Safety Fair is Saturday and has something for everyone. This is the eighth year for the fair which focuses on safety ranging from ID theft to bicycle safety.

CBS4's Kelly Werthmann interviewed Cary Johnson with the Jeffco DA's office about what the safety fair has to offer.

"Our office believes with the threats just kind of escalating in our world, threats to our safety, to health and wellness, someone needs to be out there providing information for families to get in one readily available place," said Johnson. "We feel that we need to be very proactive to get information in one place where people can kind of do a one-stop shopping effect and come out and get really good information."

There is also something new this year, the distracted driving booth which puts driving skills to the test while behind the wheel and texting or talking to passengers.

"There are some new things they can expect this year. Colorado State Patrol is bringing out a distracted driving simulator and so people can sit in front of a simulation of a driving event while they're texting and to help them understand that it's really not very safe," said Johnson.

Johnson also talked about a special event for children in which they have fun and also learn something valuable.

"One of the things I like really well is the children's bicycle rodeo. One of the reasons I like it so well is that Lutheran Hospital provides free bike helmets for every child that goes through it so they get fitted, they make sure the bike helmet is fitted properly, and then we have law enforcement take the children through a bike course, so they learn the rules of the road but they also get this one-on-one interaction with a law enforcement officer. And then we have a wonderful partnership with the Golden Optimists that provide bikes for us and they say to us every year, 'Now make sure we don't get those bikes back. We want you to look for children during the event and give them away,'" said Johnson.

The Jefferson County District Attorney's Safety Fair is Saturday, Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

There will be more than 80 booths this year including information on:

--Teen driving safety

--Living safely with wildlife

--Water and boating safety

--Elder abuse issues

--Emergency preparedness

--Fraud and identity theft safety

--Mental health and well-being

--Fire safety

--Veterans benefits.

You can get up to five boxes of documents shredded, and drop of unneeded prescription drugs. Bring your old cell phones in and they'll use them as emergency 911 phones for senior citizens. You can get a child ID kit made free of charge, and kids can get a free bike helmet for participating in the bicycle rodeo.
