Hash Oil Considered In Nederland House Fire

By Jennifer Brice

NEDERLAND, Colo. (CBS4) - A suspicious fire at a home in Nederland has investigators waiting for a search warrant before they go inside.

Investigators say the fire at the rental property located at 99 Pine Cliff Trail is suspicious in nature, but until need to process the scene before they can confirm if criminal activity is going on inside that home.

Neighbors heard a loud explosion then saw flames erupt into the sky around 5 p.m. Monday.

Jerry Naro lives next door, "The house was in full gulf. On one side it had blown out 15 feet."

Investigators say the home is a rental property and the owner lives in California. Firefighters believe the blaze is suspicious, possibly related to marijuana or hash oil.

Nederland Fire Captain Eric Abramson worked to stop the flames from spreading to other homes.

"From what I could see there were several propane or butane tanks," he said. "There were some tanks in the garage. It's just not normal. We have two burn patients in the middle of the day."

A helicopter airlifted those two people to burn centers in Denver.

A multi area investigation team is now on scene waiting for a search warrant before they can go inside. Nederland firefighters say they are seeing more marijuana and hash oil related fires in the mountain town, a type of fire that poses a serious danger.

"We have this element of people who are not concerned with their own safety," says Abramson. "They don't understand chemistry. It is legal to make concentrates but there is a process to get it approved."
