Construction Begins On I-25 Express Lanes From 120th To E-470

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4)- The Colorado Department of Transportation broke ground on the latest expansion of north express lanes on Interstate 25.

The project will continue the previous Express Lanes project, which was completed on I-25 between US 36 and 120th Avenue and extend the Express Lanes to Northwest Parkway/E-470.

One tolled express lane will be added in each direction as part of the $97.5 million project.

The project is designed to improve safety, capacity and choice to what CDOT calls a "rapidly developing region.

Crews will also resurface the existing lanes on that stretch. The roadway should be in its final alignment by winter 2018.

"I-25 plays a critical role in the quality of life and economic vitality in the growth of northern Colorado and this stretch is one of the most congested portions of highway in the Denver metro area, seeing an average daily traffic volume of 174,000 vehicles per day," said Paul Jesaitis, CDOT Region 1 Transportation Director, in a statement. "Ultimately, this project will positively impact so many motorists, providing benefits to local businesses, neighborhoods as well as through traffic. We're so excited to get started."

Construction will occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.
