Sketch Artist Gives Holocaust Survivor Image Of His Mother

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - A Holocaust survivor now has an image to remember his mother by thanks to a detective at the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

As a young boy, Walter was put on a train with his family to the infamous concentration camp Auschwitz. There the men and women were separated, forcing his mother to stand alone in a different line than the one Walter, his brother, and his father were in.

That was the last time he ever saw his mother. She died in a gas chamber. In another camp, Walter watched as his father was beaten to death.

He had memories of his mother, but never a photograph or image.

Then Walter's daughter contacted the Boulder County Sheriff's Office to see about having a composite sketch of his mother drawn. A detective in the department, Steve, is also a sketch artist who didn't hesitate to help Walter.

He worked with the survivor to create an image of his mother, down to her hairstyle and the kind of dress she wore. Steve presented Walter with the sketch Thursday in a touching act of kindness.
