Renewed Push In One Of Colorado's Most Notorious Cold Case Murders

By Matt Kroschel

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - This month marks seven years since a Colorado woman's body was found dismembered "thrown out like trash" off Interstate 70 near Glenwood Springs.

"Pretty much the worst thing that could happen to a mother," Janine Johler's mother Sue Johler said Tuesday.

On June 12, 2009, Johler's body was discovered on private property, in an apple orchard near the Canyon Creek Road. The remains were dismembered, wrapped in some plastic and dumped about 20 feet from the roadway and within 1/4th of a mile of the interstate at exit 109.

No arrests have ever been made. It's one of the state's most notorious cold cases.

For Johler's mother, the murder of her daughter continues to haunt her thoughts. There are still so many questions.

"Day in and day out we live with it, we miss her, we go on living like you have to do, but we miss her every day," Sue Johler told CBS4's Matt Kroschel in an exclusive interview.

There's now a renewed push by cold case detectives from Garfield County. A new team assigned to the case is back working it hoping time is actually on their side.

"It was a very heinous crime to have happen in our jurisdiction, and we really want to get this solved," Detective Megan Alstatt said.

Investigators say every possibility -- from a serial killer to someone who knew the victim well -- remains on the table in the mystery.

The FBI is assisting in the case. Right now investigators are going back through the original case file, re-interviewing her friends.

"We know it's not going to bring her back, but somebody did this to her and they should be brought to justice," Sue Johler said.

Janine Johler was initially reported missing from Aurora by her family on May 7, 2009. Sometime between then and June 12 she was murdered and her body dumped near the Canyon Creek exit just five miles west of Glenwood Springs.

She was 38 years old and had brown hair with highlights.

The Garfield County Sheriff's Office says they hope someone will decide to do the right thing and help them solve the gruesome murder.
