Thousands Ride 'Bike MS' To Help Find A Cure

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) - Saturday morning 3,000 cyclists took part in Bike MS and CBS4 is a proud sponsor of the ride. The goal is to raise $4 million to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis.

CBS4's Karen Leigh emceed the event and led the CBS4 team.

One by one the teams left the starting gate at Front Range Community College in Westminster. They ride for people like Scott Kaplan, who was diagnosed with MS 13 years ago.

"It's my way to fight MS … the only way I know how … this is one of my favorite days of the year," Kaplan said.

They ride for family members.

"We're riding for people who have MS, including our son, and we are riding to support the cause and we want there to be a cure in my lifetime -- and I'm 66," a participant said.

Leigh started riding for her best friend who lives with MS.

"I was so inspired by her because she's so strong," Leigh said.

Over her years of work with the MS Society, Leigh realized MS has touched so many people close to her.

"I have people from my church, from my neighborhood, from my high school," Leigh said. "You see people riding with MS, and you see younger people riding for their parents and it's uplifting."

When the 100-mile ride from Fort Collins and back got tough, finding a cure for MS provided the motivation to keep pedaling.

"You can certainly power through and do this because there are people who have MS who struggle to get out of bed in the morning," Leigh said. "So this is the least we can do."
