Action On Stadium Naming Rights Could Come Monday

DENVER (CBS4) - The deadline to bid on the naming rights for Sports Authority Field at Mile High is Monday at 3 p.m.

The stadium naming rights are being auctioned off, along with the rest of Sports Authority's intellectual property, by order of a federal bankruptcy judge.

Matt Sugar, Director of the Metropolitan Football Stadium District says he isn't sure if there have been any bids yet.

"I haven't heard of any," Sugar said. "It's tied up in the courts, so your guess is as good as mine."

Sugar scheduled a Stadium District Board meeting for Monday in hopes the board may have naming rights bids to discuss. An update on naming rights is on the agenda, but Sugar said he isn't sure when the list of potential suitors will surface.

No matter which company bids, the Stadium District has asked the court for some final say over the bidding process.

"We have reserved the right to object to any bidder that will come in," Sugar said but wouldn't elaborate about the types of companies that the board might take issue.

"We'll just have to wait and see," said Sugar who confirms he's received letters of inquiry about naming rights from marijuana companies, but says the Stadium District hasn't fielded any bids.

So far, Sports Authority's stadium naming rights payments are up to date. The next annual payment is due August 1st and would go into default 30 days later.

Calls to Hilco Streambank, the company hired to auction off Sports Authority's intellectual property, including naming rights and customer data, have not been returned.
