Employees with Rocky Mountain Aerial Survey say the plane was flying in the area for a government job, taking aerial pictures.

David's teammate Blake Montgomery said he was working for his parents aerial survey company out of Longmont.

"His dad hired him to work for him this summer and he was really excited, would always tell me about it about how he was going to be making good money to do what he loved. That's the way he went out," said Montgomery.

He said that he and David became close friends while playing football for Niwot High School.

"David was a great guy he always... he never took anything for granted. He always attacked life with a positive attitude," said Montgomery.

"It's unbelievable... you never expect that something like that could happen to someone 17 years old," said Montgomery.

The NTSB is investigating the plane crash. It could be weeks before we know what went wrong.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Jere Ferrill.
