Denver Comic Con To Confiscate Props Considered Dangerous

By Howard Nathan

DENVER (CBS4)- Props are typically part of the costumes and culture at Denver Comic Con but this year, those considered dangerous will be confiscated. There will also be additional security measures at PrideFest in Denver this weekend.

Comic Con kicks off at the Colorado Convention Center on Friday. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend the three-day event.

Robert Riggs, a vendor from South Dakota, said he tries not to worry.

"I just told myself a long time ago, that you can't live your life in fear," said Riggs.

When CBS4's Howard Nathan asked Denver Comic Con organizer Tara Hubner of Pop Culture Classroom, "Who is going to run security, the Klingons?" she was reluctant to share specific security details.

"While we can't discuss details, we look at different threats going on around us and we have made adjustments accordingly and we will have a robust security presence on site," said Hubner.

Some 350,000 people are expected to attend PrideFest in Denver this weekend. The LGBT community will be protected by private security as well as officers from the Denver Police Department.

Police are not willing to share any specific details but did confirm there will be bag checks.

"We're all aware of what happened in Orlando, that's why we decided we needed to make sure that despite the fact there aren't any credible threats that we do have enhanced security measures in place," said Denver Police Department spokeswoman Christine Downs.

Riggs said he plans to be on alert for danger even if it might be hard to spot.

"It's actually hard to tell at a convention like this because there's people wearing costumes with fake guns and samurai swords, things like that," said Riggs.
