Tiny Houses Coming To Denver

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver's Board of Environmental Health has cleared the way for tiny houses to come to the Mile High City.

On Thursday night, the board approved final revisions to Denver's residential health and housing regulations. The revisions include removing the previous minimum square footage requirements which allow smaller dwellings, including tiny homes.

The revisions are designed to expand affordable housing options in Denver. Prior to the changes the requirement was 150 square feet for one person and 100 square feet for every additional person.

Most tiny houses average between 100 and 150 square feet and are designed to maximize space efficiency. Tiny houses also require fewer raw materials and cost less than a traditional house.

"The challenge of affordable housing in Denver is something we need to address from as many angles as we can, and this is a great step forward. Allowing for tiny houses is one way to expand affordable housing options in Denver for residents struggling with costs but working hard to find a safe, decent place to live," Mayor Michael B. Hancock said in a statement.

Minimum square footage and occupancy of a dwelling will be determined by the Denver Building and Fire Code.

Hancock said there area more than 1,000 affordable units under construction in Denver.
