Wounded Broncos CB Aqib Talib Will Have To Stay In Denver

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Aqib Talib returned to the Denver Broncos' headquarters on Wednesday so team doctors could evaluate his gunshot wound after a bullet pierced his right thigh and calf last weekend.

Coach Gary Kubiak said he spoke briefly with Talib before the medical staff checked him out and charted a course of recovery for the Pro Bowl cornerback, who is due $8.5 million in base salary next season.

Kubiak said Talib, who was forced to miss the Super Bowl champs' visit to the White House on Monday, will have to stay in Denver to rehab at the Broncos' facilities when the rest of his teammates scatter for summer vacation next week.

"Oh yeah, he's definitely a guy that's going to have to be here with that going on and the rehab process," Kubiak said.

The Broncos return in late July for the start of training camp.

Police continue to investigate the shooting and Talib, who's had firearm incidents in the past, could be facing legal consequences and possible punishment from the NFL, which is looking into the matter.

Talib was shot early Sunday in Dallas, where he has an offseason home. He told police he was too intoxicated to recall details of how he got shot, according to WFAA-TV in Dallas.

Citing police, WFAA also reported that the bullet entered Talib's right thigh and exited his right calf. That trajectory suggests Talib may have shot himself.

Talib required stitches but no surgery, and the Broncos have said they expect him to make a full recovery, based on reports from the attending physicians at Medical City Hospital where he initially was treated.

NOTES: OLB DeMarcus Ware, sidelined all offseason by recurrent back problems that limited him to 11 games last season, won't practice until training camp in late July, Kubiak said. "I think he could (practice soon). I think he's very close in what he's doing, but I don't think it makes much sense. What we we have left here, four days? We'll give him the entire summer to make sure he's feeling good before we get him back out there," Kubiak said. "We'll give him the entire summer to make sure he's feeling good before we get him back out there." ... Both sides have expressed optimism that Von Miller's mega-contract could get done soon, but they're still a ways apart on terms with the July 15 deadline looming. Miller is seeking a deal that would make him the league's highest-paid non-quarterback. Asked if he felt Miller was the best defensive player in football, Kubiak said: "I think Von's a great player. I don't label guys in that manner. I think he's a great for our football team and our organization. I think the world of him."
