After Boy's Death, Grandfather Shares Gun Safety Plea

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - The death of a 10-year-old boy in Aurora Friday night could have been the result of either an accidental or self-inflicted gunshot wound.

People close to the boy are sharing his photo but they are requesting his name not be released at this time. His grandfather told CBS4 the boy's mother just moved into the apartment where the tragedy happened a few days ago.

Originally the 911 call came in just before 10 p.m. from neighbors in the Nordic Arms Apartments, located at the intersection of Galena Street and East Colfax Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found the boy with severe injuries. He died before firefighters or medics arrived.

Police haven't released many details about the case so far.

They told CBS4 they were questioning at least two people. CBS4 reports they are likely the boy's older siblings.

Anthony Taylor Sr., the boy's grandfather, shared the following plea on Saturday:

"If you have guns in the house. Please put them in a safe, put them in lock boxes and put them in a place where children can't get them and think it's a toy because this is what happens."

Taylor told CBS4 the boy was a good student.

"Great in school. He was definitely the type where you asked him to do it he'd say 'Okay, yes sir, no sir,'" he said.

Aurora's Police Chief Nick Metz visited with neighbors and family members on Saturday.

The Aurora Police Department said he was joined by local community leaders including Reverend Leon Kelly of Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives and Pastor Thomas Mayes from the Living Water Christian Center.
