DENVER (CBS4) – Communities across the Denver metro area will be brighter as Xcel Energy installs LED streetlights.
The project started in Highlands Ranch and will include Littleton, Englewood, Sheridan, Wheat Ridge and Glendale.
The LED lights use less electricity and will last longer. They will also need less maintenance and won’t be replaced as often.
“The new LED lights are designed to light up the roadway, and a little be behind the road so the sidewalk will get some light, but there’s no light that goes up into the sky,” Xcel Program Manager Bob Schommer said.
Xcel Energy believes the new lights will save more than $55,000 yearly. That savings could be passed on to Xcel customers as much as two to seven percent.
A total of 15,000 lights will be installed across Colorado with more than one-third in the Denver metro area.
