Tire Slasher Targets Apartment Complex

By Melissa Garcia

DENVER (CBS4)- People living at a Denver apartment complex couldn't get to work Thursday after discovering that their tires had been slashed overnight.

Residents walked out to the private, locked-entry garage attached to their apartment building to find out that someone had vandalized almost every car in the lot.

The Alta Springs Apartments are located just west of Havana Street and Parker Road.

"I looked around and realized that everyone had a flat tire," said Tory Orozco, who found a long gash in a tire on her brand new jeep. "And they were all punctured, with what looked like a knife."

"I heard my car making a weird noise, so that's when I got out of my car," said Gerald Johnson, another apartment resident. "And I looked to see what the noise was, and that's when I saw that my tire was flat."

Police said that there was no surveillance video, no witness, and no suspect description. Thus, investigators had closed the case.

Some residents said they were worried about their safety.

"Being a single girl in my mid-20s, I don't feel comfortable now walking out here in the middle of the night if someone's out here wielding a knife," said Orozco.

Orozco and her neighbors pay an extra $30 per month on top of their rent to be able to park in the secure garage.

But the space was not as secure as they thought it was.

"It's my dream car, and it got vandalized somewhere where I thought it was going to be safe," said Orozco. "So I will not be living here anymore after my lease is over."

Residents said that they paid hundreds of dollars out of pocket to replace the punctured tires. Orozco planned to ask the apartment complex to improve its security.
