Light Rail Maintenance Work Causes Train, Road Closures

DENVER (CBS4) - There are some road closures and light rail closures that will disrupt some Denverites on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Construction work is taking place on five RTD light rail lines in the spots where they pass through the downtown area. RTD is making bus shuttles available.

The C, D, E, F and H lines will be closed through downtown Denver Sunday night. On Friday bus shuttles were set up at the Auraria West and Downing stations. On Saturday the shuttles will run between the Union and Downing stations.

All passengers using light rail this weekend are asked to expect some delays and to give themselves some extra time to travel.

For drivers, southbound Speer Boulevard is closed from Champa to Colfax Avenue and 13th Avenue is closed from Pecos to Osage as a result of the repair work. That closure stays in place until 4 a.m. Monday. Traffic from Speer Boulevard is being detoured onto Kalamath during the closure.

In a separate road closure, Broadway from Colfax Avenue to 17th is closed until early Monday morning so crews can put in new concrete at the Broadway and 16th intersection. In addition to the concrete work, crews will also upgrade traffic signals, add ADA compliant ramps and make the intersection substantially more bicycle friendly.

"So the things that we're adding to that area include an elevated bike lane, we're upgrading the traffic signals and we're even adding new street lights," said Denver Public Works spokeswoman Heather Burke.
