Fish Pathogen Detected At 2 Hatcheries In Larimer County

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — The bacteria that cause the disease that led to the destruction of fish at two hatcheries in western Colorado have been detected at two facilities in Larimer County.

A senior fish pathologist for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Vicki Milano, said Wednesday that the pathogen behind bacterial kidney disease, or BKD, has been found in trout at the Poudre State Fish Hatchery and the Fish Research Hatchery in Bellvue following increased checks after its discovery at hatcheries in Glenwood Springs and Hotchkiss.

While some fish are carrying the bacteria at the Bellvue facilities, Milano says they aren't sick so officials are monitoring them for now. However, she says none of the fish at the state hatcheries where they have been found are being released into waterways.

Officials are also monitoring fish in the wild.
