Former Surgical Tech Accused Of Stealing Drugs May Have Lied To Get Hired

DENVER (CBS4) - The investigation into a former surgical technician accused of stealing syringes full of drugs at Swedish Medical Center revealed he had been fired by other hospitals around the country and lied about his past to get hired in Colorado.

The case against Rocky Allen is building. New court documents lay out the prosecution's case against Allen, revealing more about how he got hired at Swedish Medical Center in the first place.

Allen was fired from Swedish Medical Center in January. He's accused of stealing a syringe full of fentanyl meant for a patient and replacing it with one full of saline. Allen is believed to have committed similar thefts from at least six hospitals from around the country.

Allen's trouble reportedly started while serving in the military in Afghanistan. He was then fired from two hospitals in Washington, one in California, and another two in Arizona -- one in which he was found passed out in the bathroom holding a syringe.

Prosecutors are now arguing to include those incidents, as well as evidence showing he lied about his past to get hired in Colorado. They claim Allen used his ex-boyfriend's name as a reference on his resume listing him as the head of human resources for a company they believe he made up to hide his true employment history.

The court documents suggest Allen went as far as forging an employment verification form to help ensure his employment at Swedish Medical Center.

Thousands of Swedish Medical Center patients were alerted to the possibility they may have been exposed to hepatitis or HIV after Allen's theft. The state health department says they will not provide test results until after their investigation is done.
