Man Drowns After Canoe Capsizes In Larimer County Lake

LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - One man is dead after a canoe capsized in a Loveland lake Monday night.

Loveland Fire and Rescue Authority received the call at 8:48 p.m. about a person in the water at Boedecker Lake. Two men were in a canoe when it capsized. Both men went into the water and immediately began calling for help.

A bystander in another boat rescued one of the men and took him to shore. When the bystander went back to where the canoe had capsized he could not find the second man.

Crews arrived five minutes after the call, including a dive team. Three dives were made between eight and 15 feet deep, but nothing was seen. The body of the 21-year-old man was found on the third dive just after 10 p.m. He did not survive.

"Visibility in the water is absolutely zero. So they're doing everything by feel trying to locate that victim," said Scott Pringle of Loveland Fire & Rescue. "When you've got darkness like this and trying to dive into a lake with no surrounding lighting. We had to bring in our own lighting on our trucks and again trying to pinpoint that last scene position of the victim in the water is very, very challenging."

Authorities say the body may have been in the water for an hour and 15 minutes before being retrieved.

The rescued man suffered no injuries. The man's identity has not been released. The coroner will determine the cause and manner of death.
