Boy Scouts Feeling Frustration After Trailer Is Stolen

By Kelly Werthmann

DENVER (CBS4) - Boy Scouts are taught to always be prepared, but Ken Kinnard wasn't prepared for what happened to his trailer Monday night.

"I never anticipated somebody stealing our camp kitchen," Kinnard, Assistant Scout Master for the Gateway District Boy Scouts, told CBS4's Kelly Werthmann. "We're just sick that we lost it."

Kinnard's trailer was stolen from an outside storage lot off Colmans Way in Broomfield.

It's where the Weblos Weekend Workhorse has been stored for several years, but late Monday night a thief or thieves cut the lock on the gate and took off with the trailer. Inside it are several handmade and donated items the local scouts have collected over the past 25 years.

"There's really no street value to this gear," Kinnard said. "Even scrap value would be very minimal. However, it's priceless to our group."

The gear is used for a yearly campout with hundreds of people every Memorial Day weekend. The 40th annual event is just four weeks away.

"Everybody's calling in, 'What do you need?'" Kinnard said. "Right now I'm preparing a list of all the items that were in the trailer for our insurance so they can help us out, but also to give a list to everybody what's needed for the campout."

Len Koppl knows all too well the frustration of losing a trailer from the Outside Storage facility. One of his was taken in November.

"I replaced the trailer, but I do worry about it, so I come by a lot just to check on it," Koppl said.

Kinnard hopes his trailer will show up soon, but if not, he is preparing to have a successful campout with his scouts at the end of the month.

"It might not be like it was, but we'll get it done," Kinnard said.

Broomfield police are investigating the theft, adding there have been no other reports of items stolen since the trailer went missing. Anyone who spots the trailer is asked to call police right away.
