Presidential Primaries For 2020 Approved In Colorado House

DENVER (AP) - A plan to revive the presidential primaries in Colorado has cleared a big hurdle in the state Legislature.

The state House gave preliminary approval late Thursday night to a bill moving Colorado to a presidential primary for 2020. The proposal comes after widespread complaints about Colorado's harried presidential caucuses last month.

The measure faces one more formal vote before heading to the Senate.

Presidential primaries in concept have the support of the state's Democratic and Republican parties. But some lawmakers oppose participation by unaffiliated voters — about 37 percent of all Colorado voters. The measure allows temporary party affiliation, which some say could invite confusion.

The change would cost Colorado about $5 million.
