Man Killed After Shots Ring Out In Quiet Jefferson County Neighborhood

By Howard Nathan

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - A man is dead after being shot in a quiet neighborhood in Jefferson County.

Deputies responded to a call about a family altercation and shots fired just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the 5400 block of West Hinsdale Avenue.

"Upon arrival deputies found a deceased 31-year-old man who had been shot," Mark Techmeyer with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Ten-year-old Mikaylae Herman was having a sleepover in her house when she heard gunshots coming from a neighbor's house nearby.

"It was like bam, bam," Herman said. "It sounded very, very loud, and it was scary, so me and my friend backed away from the window."

Investigators believe the shooting happened during a family altercation in or near the backyard of the home.

"Initially I thought they were just firecrackers," said neighbor Kirk Madsen.

Madsen said he heard three gunshots and like the rest of the neighborhood is disturbed to know that four little boys live in the house where the shooting took place.

"That's concerning and obviously a quiet neighborhood, and if there's shots outside the concern is they can travel long distances," Madsen said.

Herman learned a lesson after waiting until the morning to tell her parents what she heard.

"I didn't wake them up right away, I told them in the morning. They said, 'Whenever that happens, you need to tell us,'" she said.

On autopsy was being performed on Sunday and the victim's identification is expected to be released by Monday.
