Snow Strands Teachers, Summit County Cancels Classes

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- The snowstorm stranded thousands of people trying to return to Colorado, including dozens of teachers who work in Summit County.

"When you live in Summit County you get used to snow days. This one was a little different," said parent Bruce Mitchell.

Summit School District announced they had to cancel classes on Monday, the day school was to resume after spring break, because too many teachers got stranded during spring break because of Colorado's spring snowstorm.

Half of all teachers would have missed school on Monday and the district said they didn't have enough staff or substitutes to cover those shifts.

"Due to the untimely Denver snowstorm many of the Summit School District staff have had their return flights from Spring Break canceled and have been unable to return home," the district said in a statement. "In checking in with our staff we have inventoried the flight cancellation impact and in some schools as many as 50 percent of staff have been unable to get flights home."

"Nobody getting back into the county. They say they were understaffed with teachers not coming back from all their flights cancelled with DIA, so they get an extra day," said parent Jason Ward.

Hundreds of flights were canceled at Denver International Airport on Saturday. United Airlines canceled all their flights into and out of DIA on that day.

Parents had to make other plans when it came to their children.

"A lot of parents had to take the day off," said Mitchell.

"Trying to keep them occupied they kind of have cabin fever all weekend so we're trying to get them out," said Ward.

Classes will resume on Tuesday.
