Wet, Heavy Snow Brings Large Tree Down Onto Lakewood Home

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - The spring snowstorm brought plenty of wet, heavy snow and trees -- and homes -- paid the price.

One big tree came down on a home in Lakewood on Sunday and a crew needed a crane to clean it up. The tree was about five feet in diameter. Firefighters say it caused significant damage to the home.

"Sounded like a branch snapped, kind of a loud snap. Then I looked up and a big tree fell on the house," Lakewood resident Foster Alvey said.

Alvey was clearing snow from some front yard bushes when the tree came crashing down right on top of his home.

"I thought if I had been over there a minute later it would have probably hit me," he said.

West Metro Fire responded to the scene where one other person was in the house when it fell. Luckily nobody was injured.

"It scared me because I thought, 'Well, how close was that?'" Alvey said.

Firefighters had to call in a tree-trimming company to get the tree off of the home. Alvey and his family aren't currently allowed back into their home. They will be staying with family until they're allowed back in.

A building inspector from the City of Lakewood was on scene Sunday afternoon assessing damage to the structure.

On the other side of the metro area in Englewood wet heavy snow brought down more branches. Homeowner Dave Candee's weekend workout won't stop with shoveling. He'll be cleaning up all the broken limbs from his crabapple tree.

"We've got several major branches as well as some smaller ones that just kind of broke right off the tree," Candee said.
