Sanders Picks Up A Few More Delegates At Colorado Convention

WASHINGTON (AP/CBS4) - Bernie Sanders netted a few extra delegates at Colorado's Democratic state convention - though it won't have a real impact on his chances to win the presidential nomination.

Colorado has a multistep process of allocating delegates. Based on the March 1 caucus, Sanders initially picked up 38 delegates to Hillary Clinton's 28.

Since then, Sanders has won additional support at congressional district conventions and Saturday's state convention, resulting in a few more delegates.

The final delegate allocation for Colorado: 41 for Sanders, 25 for Clinton.

That means, to date, Clinton has 1,289 delegates from primaries and caucuses to Sanders' 1,045.

When including superdelegates, or party officials who can support any candidate, Clinton has 1,758 to Sanders' 1,076.

More than 4,000 people braved the weather to show up for the contest in Loveland. Colorado Democratic Party Chairman Rick Palacio opened the convention acknowledging that tensions are high as evidenced by Sanders supporters who railed against a nominating process that they say is rigged. They point to superdelegates like Sen. Michael Bennet who is appointed by the party and supports Clinton.

"There are a lot of people who are getting disillusioned by the process with how this is actually working," one man said.

"The answer to that is to change the system and to change the rules. These are the rules and I think their point of view is completely understandable," Bennet said.

Bennet said he saw the energy as positive.

"We've got a snowstorm barreling down on us and people are showing up for democracy; it's great," he said.

Additional Information From The Colorado Democratic Party

Bennet was selected as the party's nominee for U.S. Senate at the convention.

Party officials also rounded out the total of 78 delegates who will represent Colorado at the Democratic National Convention in July.

These delegates include:

• 43 elected from Congressional Districts
• 14 were elected at-large today at the State Convention
• Nine were elected as "Party Leader and Elected Officials" at the State Convention
• 12 are unpledged delegates

"Colorado Democrats united to nominate Senator Michael Bennet, and he will win in November because he has pushed through the Republican dysfunction in Washington to get things done of behalf of the people of Colorado," said Rick Palacio, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party.
