Surprising Titans-Rams Trade Could Have Big Impact On Broncos

(The Sports Xchange) - Not only did the Los Angeles Rams set the stage to shake up their depth chart at quarterback by trading for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the ripple effect will impact multiple current NFL players.

The Rams are expected to draft one of the top quarterbacks in the draft, Cal's Jared Goff or North Dakota State's Carson Wentz.

While likely selecting a quarterback first overall for the second time in seven drafts (Sam Bradford), the Rams are soon to be turning away one of the veterans on their roster. Case Keenum went into the offseason as the designated starter but his knowledge of Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak's offense in Denver makes him likely to be targeted again via trade.

The deal now makes more sense for the Rams, who don't pick again after the first pick until the fourth round. By asking for a mid-round pick for Keenum or Nick Foles – who flamed out upon arrival from Philadelphia via trade for Bradford last summer -- the Rams can modestly replenish a greatly depleted draft arsenal. To date, the asking price for Keenum in talks with the Broncos was prohibitive. A third quarterback, 2015 third-rounder Sean Mannion, is likely to stick around given his palatable salary.

Speaking of the Broncos, this move all but mutes discussions with the San Francisco 49ers centered around Colin Kaepernick heading to Denver. The 49ers can still move up and get a quarterback, but the asking price for the No. 2 pick from the Cleveland Browns will be – and should be – astronomical. Any trade of Kaepernick was predicated on the 49ers drafting a quarterback. That seems highly unlikely at No. 7.

The Browns could face the most intriguing decision. Other than the second overall pick, their most coveted asset is left tackle Joe Thomas. While the roster was dismantled by new vice president Sashi Brown and Paul DePodesta, the stated goal is to stockpile picks and rebuild the roster. Rebuild is the most generous description possible of the current state of the roster in Cleveland.

By trading Thomas on draft day, the Browns could easily wind up with multiple top-15 picks and add to their collection of mid-rounders. One deal to contemplate – a swap with the Titans, who are looking for help at offensive tackle and happen to now hold six picks in the top 76. The Browns this offseason let center Alex Mack and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz leave in free agency.
