School Officials Defend New Board Member With Police Record

DENVER (AP) — Denver Public Schools officials are defending a new board member who pleaded guilty to child abuse with no injury, saying she fully disclosed details of the incident before she was chosen.

MiDian Holmes told board members she was taking a shower when her 2-year-old child got out of their apartment and wandered off. She was charged with child abuse in 2006. She pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. She was ordered to take parenting classes and completed her sentence.

Holmes says she wanted to put the incident behind her and move forward by pleading guilty. Holmes told board officials she did not have money to hire an attorney.

Holmes was appointed to fill the term of a board member who left the board.
