Colorado Senator Behind Bill To Make Air Travel Easier On Families

DENVER (CBS4)- Senator Michael Bennet is behind a bill that would make it easier for families traveling by air. The measure would allow additional benefits for parents and those traveling with children.

"It's a struggle just to get through the airport in one piece," said parent Jocie Bradley.

Bennet, a Democrat representing Colorado, is sponsoring the proposal that would allow parents to sit with their children on flights at no extra cost, pregnant women would be allowed to pre-board and the TSA would not be able to separate children from their parents during security screening.

"It tries to make it a little easier for families traveling with kids to know that before getting to the airport that they're going to have seats together when practicable," said Bennet.

Some people claim the additional fees for preferred seating leaves their children seated next to strangers. Many parents support the proposal but believe there should be some restrictions.

"I don't think that a 20-year-old needs to sit with their family but I think younger kids absolutely need to sit with their family members," said parent Bill Levinson.

"I would feel so terrible for the person who sat next to them," said Bradley.

Bennet proposed the changes to the Federal Aviation Administration re-authorization bill. The Senate passed his amendment with unanimous support but the re-authorization bill remains up for debate.
