'Biliteracy Seal' For Colorado Diplomas Passes State House
DENVER (AP) - A movement to add a "seal of biliteracy" to the high-school diplomas of students who speak more than one language could be moving statewide in Colorado.
The seal would mean that a student can speak English and one other language.
Denver Public Schools and a few other districts already offer the seal or are planning to. But there is no statewide Colorado standard for how to achieve the biliteracy seal.
A bill that passed the state House 48-17 Monday would give students the seal if they take four years of a foreign language, or if they can pass a standardized test proving proficiency in another language.
The measure now heads to the Senate.
At least 13 states now offer a "seal of biliteracy."
