Neighbors Say Homes In Path Of Speeding Cars

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- People living in the Aurora neighborhood where a car slammed into a home believe the problem is caused by speeding cars. They also think it could happen again.

Police told CBS4 the car failed to make a turn about 8:30 a.m. Monday and slammed into the home located at 28 S. Evanston Way. A male driver was taken away in handcuffs on an unrelated warrant.

"I was right down there, down by the yellow line when this car came straight through, he must have been doing 50-55 mph whatever. I thought he was just coming right into here and he just went right into that house," said neighbor Charlie Bartish.

Bartish described what he saw as he was turning out of his driveway, "I mean, he didn't even slow down. There was no way he was going to make the turn."

Firefighters tried to pull out the vehicle without tearing down the side of the home. The driver was arrested. Two others inside the car suffered minor injuries.

The woman inside the home was not injured but could not stay in the home Monday night.

Neighbors describe the section of South Evanston Way as a constant source of speeding among drivers.

"You can't drive like that," said neighbor Dave Lytle. "There are people walking on the sidewalk."

Lytle should know, a speeding driver slammed into his home two months ago. He thinks there should be a warning to drivers about the curve.

"I think we need to put big speed bumps here and around every corner so these people don't go so fast. They think this is like a freeway. It's unbelievable," said Lytle.

The road continues straight until the sharp curve with the homes on the corner.

"What's it going to take before you know someone goes over the sidewalk like that person right here and takes someone out?" said Lytle.

Neighbors told CBS4 they have spoken with the city but nothing has been done. The speed limit is 25 mph.
