Deputies rushed to the neighborhood at 1:15 p.m. Monday after several neighbors called 911 to report gunshots.

"We received reports of numerous shots fired in the 6200 block of East Long Circle South. The sheriff's office along with Greenwood Village police responded to the area, upon their arrival they located three shooting victims," said Arapahoe County Undersheriff Louie Perea.

In front of one home several orange cones had been placed in the driveway and street within the crime scene tape.

It is unclear the relationship between the victims and the shooter but Perea said the deceased victim and the gunman are not related. All the people involved lived on the same street.

It is unclear what led up to the shootings but neighbors told CBS4 a man was trying to shoot his wife with neighbors intervened and were shot.

Perea said it is unusual that this type of crime would happen in this neighborhood.

"The City of Centennial is one of the safest cities in the state and has been for numerous years. It is the safest city in Colorado. It's unfortunate that it happened," said Perea.

Five elementary schools in the neighborhood had been placed on secure perimeter status for about 10 minutes but that was lifted. Those schools include Homestead Elementary, Dry Creek Elementary, Heritage Elementary, Willow Creek Elementary and Walnut Hills Elementary.
