Man Sentenced In Deadly Christmas Hit & Run
DENVER (CBS4)- A man convicted of driving drunk and causing a deadly crash at 51st Avenue and Peoria Street early Christmas Day 2013 has been sentenced.
Johnny Gilbert was found guilty of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, vehicular assault, second-degree assault, careless driving resulting in death, third-degree assault and DUI.
Gilbert, 39, was driving drunk on Christmas Eve 2013 when he ran a red light going northbound on Peoria Street at 51st Avenue.
Dora Gaytan-Esparza, 35, was driving home from a Christmas party with her husband and two daughters when Gilbert, 39, ran a red light at Peoria Street and 51st Avenue. He collided with the van, killing Gaytan-Esparza.
Her husband and two children were injured.
Gilbert was arrested shortly after the crash not far from the scene.
Gilbert was sentenced to 34 years in prison when he was sentenced earlier this month; the maximum he could have received was a 36 year sentence.
