3 Arrested, Suspected Of Mailing Pot From Breckenridge
BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4)- Three men were arrested in Breckenridge after a year-long investigation alleging they mailed marijuana through the U.S. Postal Service.
The Summit County men were arrested on March 9 after a federal search warrant was served at 61 County Road 533 in Breckenridge.
Authorities seized more than 35 pounds of marijuana plant material, more than one-and-a-half pounds of marijuana oils and concentrates and a small amount of cocaine. They also found evidence of large volume manufacturing utilizing butane at the home.
The three Summit County men arrested include Tyler Berry, 33, Jayson Perlman, 40 and Patrick Kerwin, 28. They face charges of dispensing, selling, distribution or possession with intent to manufacture, dispense, sell or distribute marijuana or marijuana concentrate.
Breckenridge police say it is not only illegal to use butane to extract marijuana concentrate but extremely dangerous.
"It is illegal under Colorado State Law and Municipal Code to use butane to extract oil from marijuana. Butane is extremely flammable and creates a significant public safety risk," said Breckenridge Police Detective Caitlin Kontak. "Butane gas is heavier than air and will settle to floor level where simple static electricity from walking on carpet is enough to ignite the gas."
The U.S. Postal Service said it is illegal under federal law as well as Colorado law to use the U.S. Mail to transport illegal drugs, including marijuana.
