Spring Breakers About To Fill Resorts In The High Country

VAIL, Colo. (CBS4) - Despite an unusually dry February and a warm start to March, resorts in Colorado's high country are preparing to welcome large crowds for spring break season.

Some have already begun showing up, and were greeted Thursday with sunshine and near 60 degree weather.

"A little warmer than I expected, it's little slushy at the bottom here but once you get up the mountain it's pretty nice," said one skier at Vail.

It may still technically be winter, but those in the mountains say it feels like spring.

"It's gorgeous, warmer than expected," said another.

A resort representative said they've had some new snow, but mostly sunshine.

"We have had eight inches of new snow in the last week, and the sun is out so skiers and snowboarders are having a fantastic time in the great conditions and it's definitely spring skiing."

With thousands of spring breakers heading to the state to hit the slopes, the warm weather feels good, but some fresh snow would also be appreciated.

"I've been riding up lift just in a t-shirt, trying to cool down,"

The warm spell is expected to change, though.

"Next week the forecast is calling for some additional snowfall," said a resort representative.

The ski areas don't have exact numbers just yet, but report sales for this spring season are on track to be about average.

The expected snow should arrive in one to two inches each day next week.
