Mayor Unveils Plan To Revitalize Performing Arts Complex

DENVER (CBS4)- Denver has a vibrant theater community and the city wants to turn the Denver Performing Arts Complex into a mecca for residents and students.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock joined a team of more than 30 people to present their vision to revitalize the arts center to keep up with the changing community.

The current campus was built in the 70s. The changes will take place in nearly every section of the 12-acre property. The idea is that the complex could be as busy during the day as it is at night.

The ambitious plan includes some major upgrades that include a sculpture garden, a new music hall in a new building, places for recording, rehearsal and new media, more hotels, retail space and housing, a strong education presence with the addition of a performing arts school.

"The same way that Millennial Park in Chicago is for its city and Bryant Park in New York City, they are magnets for activity and that includes growing the acreage for this awesome park. You don't get better than that. A destination park that makes our park space even bigger. Denver, this project has potential to change our city's culture and life in untold ways. It will take time. It will take careful thought and it will take resources," said Hancock.

The concept is likely to be expensive but there is no current cost estimate.
