City Program Seeks To Hire More Teachers Of Color
DENVER (CBS4) - A new initiative by the city of Denver aims to increase diversity among teachers in Denver Public Schools.
Mayor Hancock and the DPS Superintendent announced the mission to recruit minority teachers in town.
The program is called Make Your Mark, and includes DPS schools as well as six Denver charter school networks.
The goal is to diversify the workforce in Denver by hiring more teachers of color. Currently, less than 25% of teachers are minorities. Students of color, however, make up 75% of the district, according to the program's website.
Mayor Hancock is pitching Denver's strong economy and nationally known celebrations.
"From our MLK parade and Cinco de Mayo festival, to the Great American Beer festival. Our weather is a draw as well, with at least 300 days of sunshine a year," he said.
Friday morning, the mayor and DPS officials will host a group of prospective teachers for a tour and informational session.
